Live with Water
The 1st International Conference of geography teachers.
You are invited to the first international conference “Live with Water” that will be held from 31 May – 1 June 2019 in Podsreda, Slovenia.
The aim of the international conference is to provide the participants with an opportunity to exchange their experiences, and reach for ideas and novel approaches to teaching geography or any other school subject when focused on water and conscientious uses of water sources.
Teachers are invited to discuss their experiences and present examples of good practice. We welcome presentations about different teaching strategies and innovative approaches, about fieldwork and the use of ICT – all focusing on different ways to encourage both the student’s and the teacher’s creativity. Similarly important are case studies of the teacher’s support of the students’ participation in managing the aquatic ecosystems and the systems by water in their local community or school district as these help to actively integrate the youth in their local community and the social environment.
A line-up of invited speakers from Slovenia and abroad will highlight the importance of water sources and the incorporation of such topics into the school curricula. The international conference offers all the participants an opportunity to exchange experiences and to socialise and mingle with other geography teachers and with teachers of similar sciences.
At the conference, the following sub-themes will be addressed:
- A glass of pure water, please (e.g. care for clean water sources; drinkable water in schools; the management thereof)
- When the river overflows or dries up (e.g. getting to know the discharge and the flow of a river; flood observation and monitoring; protection of floodplains; the regulation of watercourses)
- Getting my feet wet or Fieldwork near water (e.g. getting to know water sources; education trails near water; ideas for regulating watercourses/banks; effect of water on the relief and vice versa; observing of the river relief and/or the movement of the river-bed)
- There’s no life without water (e.g. the importance of water for food production, for flora and fauna)
- Water connects (e.g. the water circle; the cooperation of schools, municipalities/countries near the same watercourse or in the same river basin; how to prove that the water has been polluted on its way)
- Water – providing energy forever and a day (e.g. the locality of mills, sawmills, hydroelectric power plants; electricity generation and its environmental effects)
- The sustainable use of water sources (e.g. water sources through time; exploring the water use in an area and its consequences; the importance of the preservation of hydrological natural values; water source-based tourist offer).
